Moi Forces Academy, Nairobi
Our heritage

A proud history of learning and service.

Foundation

Moi Forces Academy, Nairobi, is a leading public boys’ boarding secondary school with a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, discipline, leadership and holistic learner development. Located at Moi Air Base, approximately 8km from Nairobi’s Central Business District, the Academy serves learners from both Armed Forces and civilian families. Through the leadership of the Chief Principal, James K. Maina MBS, and the sponsors, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) the school envisions, “To be a centre of quality learning for educational excellence,” reflects its commitment to providing a supportive and inspiring environment in which learners can develop academically, socially, morally and in co-curricular activities. The Academy was established in 1979 through the initiative of His Excellency the late President Hon. Daniel T. Arap Moi, CGH, following a request from children at Moi Air Base Nursery School for a school closer to their homes. A major fundraising drive held on 9 June 1979 raised KSh. 7.8 million, and the foundation stone was laid on the same day. Construction followed, and the first primary learners reported in February 1980, followed shortly by students joining Form One and Form Five. Established initially as a centre of excellence for children of Armed Forces personnel, the institution has since evolved with Kenya’s education system, transitioning to the 8-4-4 system in 1989 and later becoming a boys-only secondary school. Today, Moi Forces Academy continues to build on this rich heritage while preparing learners for the demands and opportunities of the modern world.

Growth

The Academy provides a conducive environment for teaching and learning, supported by a range of academic and co-curricular facilities. The school continues to strengthen and expand its infrastructure and learning resources to respond to the changing needs of learners and the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework. The Academy places strong emphasis on academic achievement, discipline and character formation. Learners are encouraged to develop self-discipline, responsibility, teamwork, adaptability, patriotism and a strong sense of purpose. Through classroom instruction, mentorship, guidance and counselling, sports and other co-curricular programmes, the school seeks to nurture well-rounded individuals prepared to make meaningful contributions to society. Academic excellence remains one of the Academy’s defining strengths. The school has continued to pursue improved learning outcomes through effective teaching, learner support, academic monitoring and a culture that values hard work and discipline.

Today

At Moi Forces Academy, education extends beyond academic performance. The school promotes participation in sports, clubs, societies and other co-curricular activities, providing learners with opportunities to discover and develop their talents, build confidence, cultivate teamwork and develop leadership skills. These activities complement classroom learning and contribute to the Academy’s broader goal of producing responsible and capable young men. With its strong heritage, dedicated staff, supportive community and commitment to continuous improvement, Moi Forces Academy remains focused on providing quality education and holistic development. The Academy continues to uphold the values that have shaped its identity over the years while embracing emerging educational approaches, improved facilities and new opportunities for learner development. From its humble beginnings in 1979, Moi Forces Academy has grown into an institution defined by excellence, discipline and service—continuing to inspire generations of learners to lead, serve and make a positive difference in society.
